Health issues
I was reading an article in the Telegraph recently, regarding results of some long term research in the US, using over half a million people during a twenty year period that strongly pointed to; swimming, cycling, jogging ( and rowing ), endurance exercise on a regular basis producing more favourable outcomes when faced with Influenza (Flu). It suggsted that succumbing to the disease ( dying from it) was reduced by 36% if regular endurance exercise was undertaken. It was decreased to 48% if both cardio and weight training were performed regularly, however, weight training alone did not prove any protective shield against the virus.
Even if one exercises below our current national standards it does seem to offer a degree of protection. The NHS suggests that health protection can be gained in adults who undertake ‘moderate intensity’ activity for two and a half hours or intense exercise for an hour and a quarter per week.
Separately, experts ( yes, those elusive creatures no-one ever sees) also reccommend adults work out to build up muscle strength twice a week. This latter comment is aimed at preventing premature imbalance and frailty issues leading to falls and fractures.
It is never too late to do something – anything is better than nothing.
Hope this helps,
Kendall
