Exercise and breast cancer

Researchers in Texas have found that exercise can flatten the signalling in breast cancer cells. Reducing and even killing cancer cells. Muscle contraction releases some factors which decrease or kill cancer (neoplastic) cell growth which may help to moderate the disease. The simple action of muscle contraction during activities such as walking, cycling, going to the gym can release these factors. The risk of breast cancer is believed to be reduced by slowing the growth of pre-cancerous cells before they overwhelm the body. Regular exercise could play a part in prevention in this way. It is not a fool proof way of preventing the disease, other factors; genetic predisposition, smoking, age and comorbidities also play a part.

Back and neck pain

In a recent article published in Medscape looking at a cohort of 3000 people with neck and, or back pain lasting less than twelve weeks in a trial which used exercise only, soft tissue massage and manipulation (STMM) only and STMM with exercises

There was significant evidence to show that STMM with exercises helped more so than just providing exercises to alleviate the pain and dysfunction.

 

Exercise and cognitive function.

 

More news on exercise in recent days, which we have commented on in the past, strongly pointing to a link between higher levels and retaining cognitive function as we age. It appears that exercise reduces brain shrinkage thus maintaining capacity to function normally.
