The great British summer

The great British summer–the sun is out (sometimes), the road trips are planned, and the allure of distant lands beckons. As we trade our wellies for sun glasses, preparation is key to ensuring our travels are as comfortable as a Sunday lie-in.

Your osteopathic guide is here to help make your holiday experience as smooth and pain-free as possible!

Here are a few tips to keep you in great shape while you are away, because no one wants their holiday spoiled by pain.

One thing to do is to have a pre-travel osteopathic check-up. Tackling any little niggles or aches and pains before you go is like ensuring your satnav’s up to date—avoids unexpected detours of discomfort.

While jetting off, you’ll likely be sitting around airport lounges and on aircraft longer than a Horse-guard at Buckingham Palace, which can leave you stiff and in pain. Try to keep your back straight back, your feet firmly planted so you are stable and comfortable. Pop a small lumbar pillow in your hand luggage, or roll up a jumper for some back support. Experience has taught me there are three points of danger ( unless you are diving with sharks, that’ll make four). Luggage in and out of the boot of the car, luggage off the carousel and, oddly, sunbeds. They were not built for humans to sit on.

Next, there’s that all-important ‘ movement’ to do. Whether it’s a stroll down the airplane aisle or a pit stop on the M4, remember to move about to boost circulation and stave off sluggishness.

Beware, the airplane cabin is a master of disguise, slyly depleting your body of hydration. Drink plenty of water! While G&Ts at 30,000 feet have their charm, moderation is key to keeping dehydration at bay. Pack some nourishing snacks too, so you’re not tempted to buy unhealthy crisps or sweets while travelling.

Before you go, a quick osteopathic tune up for your body and set you off to enjoy your holiday as you deserve. And if the worst happens and you do hurt yourself while you are away, remember you can book online while you are away to ensure you get seen as soon as you are back home.
